Polio Virus Strain Bank Facility
01Scope
EPCm delivery of a WHO-supervised, GMP-compliant poliovirus storage and containment facility supporting multiple virus strains. The facility includes BSL-3 containment areas, cryogenic storage systems, -80°C freezers, liquid nitrogen banks, and supporting GMP utilities across 300 m².
02Challenge
Poliovirus containment requires the highest levels of biosafety, biosecurity, and environmental protection. The project required validated containment of infectious materials throughout the facility lifecycle, including personnel and material flows, equipment decontamination, high-risk waste handling, effluent treatment, and compliant disposal of potentially contaminated wastewater. Compliance with WHO GAP III requirements and robust business continuity measures were critical.
03Solution
Engineered a fully contained BSL-3 facility featuring airlock entry systems, pass-through chambers, double-door autoclaves, and redundant HEPA-filtered HVAC systems with continuous environmental monitoring. A dedicated bio-waste management and effluent decontamination system was implemented to ensure the safe inactivation, treatment, and disposal of all potentially contaminated wastewater prior to discharge. The facility also included validated fumigation and decontamination processes, integrated BMS controls, and GMP-qualified utilities to support secure, long-term poliovirus containment.
04Result
The facility was successfully designed, commissioned, and qualified in 2021. It passed biosafety and containment audits with zero critical findings and provides secure, long-term storage of poliovirus strains in support of global polio eradication initiatives.
