Multi-Strain Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Vaccine Manufacturing Facility
01Scope
Consulting, planning, detailed engineering, and construction supervision for a 1,500 m² high-containment vaccine manufacturing facility supporting three Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) virus strains. The project included virus cultivation, antigen production, injectable vaccine manufacturing areas, QC laboratories, warehousing, and GMP utility systems.
02Challenge
Handling live FMD virus required BSL-3-equivalent containment measures, stringent segregation of viral strains, validated decontamination processes, and safe inactivation of microbiological waste and contaminated effluent. Maintaining biosafety, environmental protection, and GMP compliance throughout the vaccine manufacturing lifecycle was critical.
03Solution
Developed the facility master plan, process layouts, and detailed engineering design for a fully integrated high-containment manufacturing facility. The design incorporated segregated production suites, HEPA-filtered HVAC systems, cleanroom pressure cascades, CIP/SIP systems, HVAC fumigation capability, bio-waste decontamination, and dedicated effluent inactivation and treatment systems. Construction activities were supervised to ensure compliance with GMP, biosafety, and project quality requirements.
04Result
Successfully completed in 2008, providing the client with a high-containment vaccine manufacturing facility capable of supporting the full process from virus cultivation through final injectable vaccine production while meeting GMP and biosafety requirements.
